Fly or Drive is a free tool that helps you decide whether to drive or fly for any U.S. trip. Enter your cities, then compare total dollars, door-to-door time, and travel experience — so you understand the cost of the decision before you book.
- Set your route. Choose one-way, round trip, or multi-city and enter origin and destination. Optional stops are supported for multi-city trips.
- Tune your assumptions. Adjust travelers, MPG, gas price, and airfare in Basic mode, or open Advanced and Expert for food, parking, tolls, hotels, bags, rideshare, and destination rental.
- Set how you want to travel. Optionally lean from Must fly to Must drive so the recommendation matches your preference.

Should I drive or fly for my trip?

What costs are included in the drive vs fly comparison?
Driving estimates include fuel and can include road food, tolls, mileage wear, and hotels for multi-day drives. Flying estimates include tickets and can include airport food, bags, ground transport, rideshare, airport parking, and destination rental. See the full cost checklist.
When is driving cheaper than flying?
Driving is often cheaper on shorter trips and when multiple travelers share one car — especially if no overnight hotel is needed. Long drives with hotel nights can make flying cheaper even when gas looks inexpensive.
How far is too far to drive instead of fly?
There is no single mile cutoff. Compare door-to-door hours and full cost including overnight hotels. Many travelers reconsider driving when the road trip needs an overnight stop and flying is still a same-day option.
Does it work for round trips and multi-city routes?
Yes. Choose one-way, round trip, or multi-city, add stops if needed, and the calculator totals time and cost across each leg.
